Malaysian PM to visit Vietnam this week


Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and wife will visit Vietnam from July 20-21 at the invitation of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday.

This is Ibrahim’s first official visit to Vietnam since he took office in December 2022.

Malaysia is Vietnam’s second-largest trading partner in ASEAN and its ninth-largest trading partner in the world.

Trade turnover between the two countries reached $14.8 billion in 2022, up 17.9% compared to 2021, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

During the meeting with Malaysian Ambassador to Vietnam Dato’ Tan Yang Thai on April 7, Chinh said Vietnam has always appreciated its friendship and strategic partnership with Malaysia.

Chinh expressed his wish that the two countries strive to bring bilateral trade turnover to $18 billion or more by 2025.

Malaysia is among Vietnam’s top 10 largest investors. The nation is investing in at least 718 projects in Vietnam, with a total registered capital of $13 billion.

Vietnam has 24 investment projects in Malaysia, with a total registered capital of nearly $860 million.

Vietnam and Malaysia established diplomatic relations in 1973, and the two nations became strategic partners in 2015.
