Malaysian lawmaker criticized for saying nurses’ uniforms too tight, reveal body shapes

Wan Razali Wan Nor of Malaysia’s PAS party has come under fire for saying nurses’ attire is too tight and not Shariah-compliant.

His comments in parliament on Thursday drew the ire of health organizations and unions.

“The uniforms worn by nurses are designed to be functional, to make it easier for them to carry out their duties, they are not too tight and adhere to the guidelines set by the Health Ministry,” Malayan Nurses Union president Nor Hayati Abd Rashid told The Star newspaper.

She added that the guidelines are that they can’t be too tight, and the length of the top of the uniform must be below the buttocks.

Nor also said the wearer’s body shape is visible with the current dress code and urged the government to consider changing the uniform.

Malaysian Medical Association president Dr. Muruga Raj Rajathurai expressed dismay over Nor’s statement.

“It is sad that amid nationwide concern over the future and sustainability of our healthcare system, an MP is more concerned about the dress code of nurses,” he told the New Strait Times.
