Malaysia exports fresh durian to China for first time

Malaysia began exporting fresh durians to China on August 24, two months after the two countries signed a protocol on phytosanitary requirements for the export of the fruit to China.

Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup said for a start, 40 tonnes of fresh durians, including varieties such as Musang King, Black Thorn, D24, and IOI, from eight exporting companies will be shipped to China in three phases.

After the first phase with 15 tonnes on August 24, the second phase will follow on August 25 with 10 tonnes, and the remainder will be sent in the third phase, he said at the launch of the fresh durian export to China.

The export of fresh durians to China became possible after the signing of the Protocol on Phytosanitary Requirements for the Export of Fresh Durian from Malaysia to China, he noted.

The agreement was signed by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and Minister of the General Administration of Customs China Yu Jianhua in Putrajaya on June 19.
