A nearly 10-meter-high hillside collapsed onto a couple’s house in the northern mountainous province of Lang Son on Sunday morning, resulting in their deaths.
The victims, To Van Muoi, 47, and his wife Mai Thi Ha, 49, were asleep in their home, which also served as a coffee shop, when the incident occurred.
District authorities mobilized the militia, army personnel, and machinery to search for the couple. Their bodies were recovered by 10 a.m.
The landslide destroyed a row of one-story houses located at the base of the hill. Local authorities confirmed that only the couple was in the house at the time of the landslide.
Although there was light rain on the morning of the incident, the area had experienced heavy rain for several days prior.
According to the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, from July 28 to August 2, heavy rains in the northern region caused floods and landslides, resulting in 11 deaths and one missing person.
