Kiwi woman jailed for overfeeding dog to death from obesity

A woman in Auckland, New Zealand has been sentenced to two months in prison for overfeeding her pet dog until he became obese, unable to walk, and suffered from many diseases and later died.

She was charged with “animal cruelty” for keeping a dog named Nuggi that weighs 53.7 kg, causing the animal to die from multiple illnesses.

As ordered by the Manukau District Court this week, the woman must also pay reparations of NZD$1222 (US$720) and disqualified from owning dogs for a year.

According to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), the dog, Nuggi, was found by police in 2021.

He weighed nearly 120 pounds and was barely able to move, News Week reported.

He was then removed from his owner’s home in Auckland and was placed in the care of the SPCA.

Despite shedding 19.6 pounds in two months, approximately 16.5% of his original body weight under the SPCA’s supervision, Nuggi succumbed to a liver hemorrhage.

An autopsy indicated he suffered from additional health issues, including liver disease and Cushing’s disease, as reported by the organization.

The female owner had been feeding Nuggi up to 10 pieces of chicken a day, on top of the dog biscuits she fed him.

SPCA chief executive Todd Westwood said they were used to treating underweight animals, saying Nuggi was “one of the most obese animals we’ve ever encountered,” the New Zealand Herald reported.

When being rescued by the SPCA, Nuggi could not even walk 10 m and had to stop three times to catch his breath.

Animal control officers said his legs appeared to be “collapsing under the weight of his huge body.”
