China suggested the US contributed positively in safeguarding peace in the South China Sea after Washington called for settlement of disputes through dialogue and peaceful means.
Member of the Chinese State Council Yang Jiechi at the end of a high-level dialogue Chinese – American in Beijing said it has the right to defend territorial sovereignty and maritime rights.
“China respects and protects the rights that all countries have under international law such as airline and travel freely,” Reuters quoted Mr Yang told reporters. Should disputes by the parties concerned resolved through consultation.
Yang said China hopes the United States will adhere to strict commitment not to take sides in territorial disputes, played a positive role in safeguarding peace and stability in the South China Sea.
US Secretary of State John Kerry said that relevant parties in dispute should refrain. “US-backed negotiations and a peaceful settlement measures based on the rule of law. We are concerned by any unilateral step by any party aimed at changing the status quo,” Mr. Kerry said.
According to US Secretary of State, Mr. Yang has reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment in maintaining the freedom of flying and travel.
China claims sovereignty over the South China Sea a large area, against encroachment on the waters of neighboring countries such as Vietnam, the Philippines. China recently irritated after US police patrol boats deployed artificial islands built illegally Beijing South China Sea, calling it a provocation. American said patrol activities are aimed at protecting freedom of movement.
