The first leg of the AFF Cup semifinals between Indonesia and Vietnam on Friday will kick off at 4:30 p.m. (Hanoi time) instead of 7:30 p.m. over security concerns.
The reschedule was made by the Football Federation of Indonesia (PSSI) due to worries about security issues.
Although AFF Cup is not part of FIFA competition system, FIFA has requested the organizers to tighten the security for the match and will send experienced staff to Indonesia to monitor it.
Football matches between Vietnam and Indonesia always bring great attraction and have a certain intensity both on and off the pitch. In addition, the Friday match is held in Indonesia, where the Kanjuruhan Stadium human crush occurred, killing more than 130 people.
Because of that, FIFA was aware of the risks and paid special attention to this match, which will be held in Bung Karno Stadium.
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) also sent security officers to Indonesia for the match.
The game will have two match supervisors instead of one as usual and one referee supervisor.
This is unprecedented for a Southeast Asian football tournament.
“Ensuring the safety and security of the match and members of the away team (Vietnam) is the responsibility of the host. We have asked the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) and the organizers of the match to strengthen security and ensure that the match takes place with high quality,” a representative of Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) said.
