Indonesia, Thailand to be punished again for SEA Games brawls

Football site Ball Thai Stand said AFC had sent a notice to Football Association of Thailand (FAT) about the additional penalty.

AFC considers the penalties that FAT and Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) issued “not enough.”

The confederation said it had eviewed the video of the incident and saw many violations that went unaddressed, and that it will give additional penalties to those involved, along with monetary fines to FAT and PSSI, according to Ball Thai Stand.

In the SEA Games 32 final match, Indonesia were leading 2-1 when Thailand’s Yotsakorn Burapha scored just before the final whistle. Thai players and coaching staff then provoked Indonesia, which set off a brawl on the pitch.

When Indonesia’s Irfan Jauhari made it 3-2 in extra time, his team then provoked Thailand, which led to an even more intense fight. The referee gave five red cards to members of both teams.

Indonesia, with more men on the field, scored two more goals to seal a 5-2 victory and win the SEA Games gold medal for the first time in history.

After the melee in the final, FAT banned two coaching staff and an official from the Thai team for one year, and suspended two players for six months.

However, the PSSI said that they would not do so.

“Why do we have to punish the players?” PSSI president Erick Thorir said at press conference in Jakarta in May. “Of course, we will make some adjustments, but I think it’s just a spontaneous act when the players are provoked and that can be tolerated.”
