Indonesia has started offering a five-year visa policy that allow maximum stays of up to 60 days, as Southeast Asia’s largest economy seeks to attract more visitors.
The visa policy, which took effect from Dec. 20, is for multiple entries as part of the government’s efforts to speed up the economy, said immigration chief Silmy Karim as cited by Antara news agency.
Foreigners now can apply online and pay with a credit card.
A regular tourist visa for Indonesia is valid for 30 days and one entry and visitors can extend it for another 30 days before it expires.
As of Dec. 8, nearly 10 million foreign tourists had arrived in the country, surpassing this year’s target of 8.5 million.
However, the figure was still lower than neighboring countries such as Malaysia (26 million), Thailand (24 million) and Vietnam (11.2 million).
Indonesia has set a target of attracting 40 million foreign tourists in 2025.
Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore have also been racing to offer flexible visa policies and have eased entry requirements to attract foreign visitors, especially from emerging markets like China and India.
