Coach Shin Tae-yong said Indonesia had the intention to play defensively to get a point against Vietnam in the AFF Cup group stage game on Thursday.
“Before the game, I told the players that our plan is not to lose and try to get at least a point. Vietnam are a stronger team than Indonesia. Therefore, I want the players to put up a fight with great spirit. I’m happy with a point and how we played,” Shin said in the post-match conference.
Indonesia put on a defensive display for most of the time. They only had 30 percent of possession and one shot in the entire game, committed 13 fouls and received four yellow cards.
Thanks to that approach, Indonesia were able to keep a point to themselves and stay at the top of group B with seven points like Vietnam, but scored more goals.
“We played with five defenders in the game. We had to use a big number of players inside the box to stop the quality attackers of Vietnam,” Shin added.
Shin is also proud when the team have seven U23 players but still played well and he believes that Indonesia will improve further in the future.
Indonesia will have to play the last game of group B with Malaysia and it’s going to be a decisive one, while Vietnam only have to face Cambodia, who have already been eliminated.
