Ice, frost appear on Roof of Indochina as temperature drops below zero

A layer of frost covered the surface of wooden floors where the Fansipan symbol was located on top of the 3,147-meter mountain.

The temperature at Fansipan peak was about minus two degrees Celsius on Monday night with humidity of nearly 80%.

It marked the second time ice and frost appeared on Fansipan peak since the beginning of winter this year. The first time was on Nov. 20.

In Sa Pa, a popular tourist city at an altitude of 1,600 m above sea level, the temperature plunged to below 6 degrees Celsius on Monday.

Frost is expected to appear on Tuesday at other high peaks in Lang Son and Quang Ninh provinces.

The Lan Pan Tan mountain peak in Mu Cang Chai District of Yen Bai Province was also covered in ice and frost last Friday.

Ice and frost typically form when air temperatures drop below 4 degrees, and temperatures of the surfaces of objects, like plants and the ground, are at around zero degrees.

Northern provinces and the north central region are experiencing a severe cold spell starting from Dec. 16, the longest since the beginning of this winter.

During this cold spell, temperatures in northern provinces and three north central provinces Nghe An, Ha Tinh and Thanh Hoa have dropped below 10 degrees Celsius.

The National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting said that the cold air will weaken from Tuesday and the temperature in the north will gradually increase.

Hanoi’s temperature on Tuesday could be around 10-22 degrees Celsius. In the following days the daytime temperature will rise to 25 degrees, and 17-18 degrees at night.

Temperatures in mountainous areas such as Sa Pa will increase from 3-12 degrees to 6-18 degrees.
