HCMC to build overpasses, parking lots to draw people to metro

Nine of the 11 elevated stations on HCMC’s 1st metro line will be connected with pedestrian overpasses and have parking lots in the vicinity.

All the elevated stations are in Binh Thanh District and Thu Duc City.

Parking lots with capacity of 500 motorbikes each will also be built nearby those stations, Nguyen Quoc Hien, deputy head of the Ho Chi Minh City Management Authority for Urban Railways (MAUR), told a city’s meeting on Thursday.

Exact locations have not been revealed.

All the overpasses, which cross over the Hanoi Highway, would be completed by the time the metro begins operation, scheduled for late next year, he said.

The metro line will stretch 19.7km between Ben Thanh Market in District 1 and Suoi Tien Theme Park in Thu Duc City, and have 14 stations, three underground.

The city also plans to build more bus stations and integrate bus routes with the metro to provide easier access to the latter.

After 10 years of construction and multiple delays, the metro line is 93% finished, and had its first test run on Wednesday, with a train traversing 9km on the elevated section with 100 passengers, including city officials.

It will use 17 Japanese-made trains, each with three cars and a capacity of 930 passengers.

It is expected to cost over VND43.7 trillion (US$1.89 billion).
