HCMC taxi driver fined $890 for overcharging Japanese tourist

HCMC authorities fined a taxi driver VND21 million (US$890) and revoked his license for two months for gouging a Japanese tourist by charging him 10 times the actual fare.

On March 14 the passenger took the taxi at Tan Son Nhat Airport for a seven-kilometer trip to a hotel in District 1. The meter read VND120,000 ($5.07), but the driver demanded VND1.2 million.

The man informed his hotel, which helped him file a complaint with the police.

After the police stepped in, the driver was also forced to return the excess amount to the man.

Authorities said the incident spoiled the city’s tourism image and gave a bad impression to foreign tourists.

A series of taxi scams targeting foreign tourists have been reported in recent times.
