HCMC proposes route to Vietnam’s largest port

A road to link Ho Chi Minh City’s Cat Lai Port with two routes has been proposed to boost regional connectivity.

In a statement sent to the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday, the city’s Chairman Phan Van Mai said the proposed route would link Tan Cang-Cat Lai Terminal, Vietnam’s busiest container port, with HCMC – Long Thanh – Dau Giay Expressway and Ring Road No.3. It will also run to Phu Huu Port that is three kilometers from Cat Lai.

The route is to better serve cargo shipment and ease traffic jams in the area, the statement read.

It will stretch six kilometers in length, 60 meters in width to have 12 lanes that allow vehicles to move at 60 kph.

Along the road, there would be a viaduct and an elevated section.

Once completed, trucks could run all the way between the terminal, the largest and most modern international container port in Vietnam that spreads over 160 hectares, and HCMC- Long Thanh – Dau Giay Expressway and Ring Road 3 without being stuck in traffic jams.

In order for the road to take shape, HCMC will need to clear a total area of 59 hectares.

Ring Road No. 3 is still under construction. Stretching over 90 kilometers (56 miles), it will allow vehicles to travel to and from Binh Duong, Long An and Dong Nai, all neighbors of HCMC and major industrial hubs, without having to enter inner HCMC.

HCMC- Long Thanh – Dau Giay Expressway at 55-kilometers in length connects the city with Thong Nhat District in Dong Nai.

Approximately 4.9 million 20-foot containers are handled in HCMC each year, which equates to about three million trucks, or more than 8,000 trucks per day transiting in and around the city to discharge or load containers from the port area.

Tan Cang-Cat Lai Terminal handles over 92 percent of this volume and roughly half of the country’s total container volume.
