HCMC downtown street gets new trees

Over 80 tamarind saplings have been grown along Le Loi Street between Saigon Opera House and Ben Thanh Market one year after the metro construction site there was cleared.

The saplings have been planted along one side of the street’s sidewalks and the median strip. The other sidewalk already has trees left from before the metro construction.

In August last year, Le Loi Street was freed from a construction site for an underground station of HCMC’s metro line No.1. after being occupied for eight years. Large trees that had lined the street for years had to be removed for construction activities.

Spanning nearly a kilometer, Le Loi is one of the four busiest streets in the city’s downtown. The street is near Nguyen Hue pedestrian street and Ben Thanh Market, and is surrounded by large commercial centers, hotels, and shops.

In March, the municipal Department of Planning and Architecture proposed building a roof over the street but so far, no progress has been made for that plan.

District 1 authorities have also proposed turning Le Loi into a pedestrian-only street with an eye on tourism.
