HCMC declares 12-day Lunar New Year break for students

HCMC students will get a break of 12 days for the upcoming Tet, or Lunar New Year festival, the municipal People’s Committee announced Saturday.

The holiday will run from January 18 to 29, 2023 for students and kindergartners in the city. This is a change from the nine-day break (January 18 to 26) initially announced. It was pointed out that students would then return to school on the 27th , a Friday, then take the weekend off again.

City students had got a nine-day break last year and 14 days the years before last.

Ho Tan Minh, Chief of Office of the HCMC Department of Education and Training, said that in previous years, high school students began the new school year mid-August. However, 1.6 million preschool and high school students in HCMC started the 2022-2023 academic year on September 5 following a late summer break as Covid-19 disrupted school gatherings in 2021.

“There are only two weeks to spare for the Lunar New Year and other holidays in the school year, so the city needs proper scheduling to ensure the education plan,” Minh said.

Many provinces have announced 11-14 day Tet holidays for students.

The Lunar New Year peaks on January 22. Laborers will have a seven-day break from January 20 to 26.
