HÀ NỘI — HCM City took the top podium of the National Senior and Age Groups Roller Sports Championships which closed on August 18 in Hà Nội.

After three days of competitions, HCM City athletes showed their outstanding skills and triumphed in nine categories in the championships for seniors. They also took six silvers and seven bronzes.

In the junior competitions, they had 15 champions, along with 13 silver and ten bronze medal holders.

Among the winners were Huỳnh Thị Cẩm Ly in the women’s 100m, 200m and 1,500m events and Đường Minh Hoàng in the men’s 100m, 1,500m and 2,000m.

Addressing the closing ceremony, General Secretary of the Skating Federation of Việt Nam (SFV) Trịnh Thị Trang said the 2024 season was organised with more events and had seen a remarkable increase number of participants.

The quality of competitions was also at a higher level with competitive and attractive performances from talented players.

Trang added that this year, along with strong roller sports hubs, there were some units that took part in the championships for the first time. It meant that the sport had received more attention from the community, proving to be a strong foundation for roller sports development in the future.

The championships, the largest scale event of the year, attracted about 200 players from ten cities and provinces including Quảng Ninh, Hải Phòng, Thái Nguyên, Bắc Giang, Bà Rịa – Vũng Tàu, along with the hosts.

Rollers took part in 15 events in the competition for seniors and 24 for the juniors in speed, slalom and slide disciplines.

“Roller sports have been included in the Olympic programme for the last two games. The sport’s movement in Việt Nam is also growing rapidly in 63 provinces and cities,” said Đặng Việt Hà, director of the Sports Authority of Việt Nam.

“This sport is especially familiar among young people and children, especially those who have never had much exposure to other sports before. The SFV is doing its job very well, cooperating with international organisations to train referees and inviting foreign experts to help train coaches and athletes. These activities are all to create a core team with good expertise to develop the movement.

“Previously, local roller sports tournaments struggled to find sponsors and the number of participants was limited. Currently, we can see the increasing number of players as a good sign, but more efforts are still needed to promote this sport,” he said. VNS
