Hanoi proposes $644 mln additional capital for No. 2 metro project

Hanoi is proposing that the completion date for its No. 2 metro route Nam Thang Long – Tran Hung Dao be extended to 2027 and VND16 trillion ($644.5 million) be added to its budget.

The Hanoi People’s Committee is completing a report on the proposal before submitting it to the Prime Minister for approval.

Le Trung Hieu, deputy director of the Hanoi Metropolitan Railway Management Board (MRB) said the project was established in 2008 but hasn’t been deployed, so the total capital had to be increased from VND19.5 trillion to 35.6 trillion and the completion date pushed back from 2015 to 2027.

The proposal for capital and completion date adjustment was submitted in 2016, but at that time, the construction location for the C9 underground station, so it was delayed.

“The location for the C9 underground station has been decided, so the Hanoi People’s Committee decided to submit the proposal again,” Hieu said.

The C9 underground station is expected to be constructed next to downtown Hoan Kiem Lake.

According to the approved plan, the Nam Thang Long – Tran Hung Dao, the city’s second metro line, will be 11.5 km long, with 2.6 km of elevated railway and 9 km underground, starting from the Nam Thang Long urban area in the northwest of Hanoi and ending at downtown Hue Street.

The project uses VND16.4 trillion ($664 million) of ODA loans from the Japanese government and VND3,079 trillion ($124 million) of capital from the state budget.
