Hanoi, Da Nang among Southeast Asia’s top destinations to travel alone

Australia-based magazine Lonely Planet has listed Hanoi and Da Nang among its seven best destinations in Southeast Asia for solo travelers thanks to low crime rates and accessible transportation.

It praised Da Nang as “best for an idyllic coastal escape and gateway to varied experiences” while it said Hanoi was ideal for its “unpretentious vibes.”

Da Nang, famous for the Son Tra peninsula, boasts a long, beautiful coastline where hotels offer beach views with large windows, balconies and infinity pools.

“Solo travelers on a budget needn’t worry about missing out as rooms here average VND1 million (US$39.44),” the magazine said.

From Da Nang, tourists can easily visit the ancient town of Hoi An, a 30-minute drive away, and the city of Hue, Vietnam’s former imperial capital, which is home to royal tombs and palaces.

In Hanoi, solo travelers are advised to wander through the Old Quarter, a colorful maze of narrow streets lined with shops and street food stalls.

“Take a break at one of the local cafes and order a strong coffee with condensed milk, best enjoyed on a short stool as you watch the world go by. Or hover around Hoan Kiem Lake, especially on the weekends,” a Lonely Planet entry read.

The remaining destinations on the list were Singapore, Penang in Malaysia, Siem Reap in Cambodia, Bangkok in Thailand and Indonesia’s Bali.

The criteria for selecting the destinations were affordable street food, low crime rates, reliable wi-fi, ease of communication, and accessible transportation.
