Hanoi cabbie steals cash, credit card from South Korean tourist

A Hanoi taxi driver was detained Monday for stealing VND4 million ($172.53) and a credit card from a South Korean customer.

Vu Van Quan, 41, and his accomplice, Nguyen Van Doc, 42, were detained by Hoan Kiem District police pending investigation into stealing and storing or buying property illegally.

VND40 million in purchases were made with the card.

The South Korean man, who has not been named, reported to the police that at around 4 a.m. on May 29, he caught a taxi to travel from Luong Ngoc Quyen Street in Hoan Kiem District to an apartment in Cau Giay District. While he was in the cab, he fell asleep.

When he reached the apartment, the taxi driver woke him up. Upon checking his wallet, the South Korean found that VND4 million was missing.

Nevertheless, he had the driver wait and went into the apartment to get the money to pay the fare. Then he went to sleep again. At 11 a.m., the visitor found out that a credit card in the wallet was also missing.

He checked and found that the card had been used at numerous convenience stores and gas stations in Hanoi, and a sum of VND40 million had been spent in this manner.

After Quan and Doc were summoned to the police station, the former admitted that he had stolen the cash and credit card from the tourist, then asked the latter to join him in spending the money.
