HAGL suffer last-minute defeat against South Korean champs

HAGL held up well against Jeonbuk FC, but momentarily lost focus in extra time and ended up giving away a goal to lose in the AFC Champions League.

In HCMC’s Thong Nhat Stadium on Friday they went into the match against the defending K-League champions buoyed by their earlier 1-1 draw against Australia’s Sydney FC on Tuesday.

Jeonbuk as expected were very strong physically, played with great coordination and threaded passes with composure and accuracy.

In the 13th minute, after three passes, the ball reached Kim Jingyu, who tried to curl it into the far corner, but HAGL keeper Huynh Tuan Linh blocked the shot.

Just before that Jeonbuk captain Hong Jeongho played a powerful header that narrowly missed the goal.

But HAGL were hardly passive and launched attacks themselves.

In the 22nd minute Nguyen Phong Hong Duy surprised Jeonbuk’s defense with a long-range shot.

Fourteen minutes later Nguyen Van Toan passed to the center to Nguyen Cong Phuong, who set Jefferson Baiano off with a great chance of finding the goal. But instead of taking the shot, Baiano continued to dribble and was intercepted.

Jeonbuk strengthened their attack in the second half with substitutions, and began to pile pressure on HAGL.

They exploited the left flank and frequently crossed into the box, with two of them bringing scoring opportunities.

The last 30 minutes saw HAGL return the favor. Washington Brandao’s shot almost went in. The Brazilian forward played with great skill but lacked accuracy with his shots. Like him, Cong Phuong too missed two chances in the last 10 minutes.

HAGL paid the price for this profligacy in the second minute of extra time. There was a cross that did not look dangerous, and two HAGL defenders jumped to clear the ball but allowed an unmarked Moon Seon-min to volley it into the top corner.

The game ended 1-0 in favor of Jeonbuk.

Though they had only 28 percent of possession, HAGL put up a good fight and had eight shots at goal compared to their opponent’s 16.

This is their second defeat in group H.

The two teams play again next Monday.
