HAGL suffer last-minute defeat against South Korean champions

HAGL held up well against Jeonbuk FC, but a moment of distraction in the last minute cost them the game and they lost 0-1 in AFC Champions League on Friday.

The 1-1 draw against Australia’s Sydney FC on Tuesday helped HAGL enter this game with confidence, although Jeonbuk are the defending champions of K-League. Besides great physique, Jeonbuk players also showed their ability to coordinate. They also showed their composure and accuracy in the passes.

In the 13th minute, the ball was passed to three Jeonbuk players before reaching Kim Jingyu, who tried to curl the ball into the far corner but it was blocked by HAGL keeper Huynh Tuan Linh. Right before that, Jeonbuk captain Hong Jeongho also got a powerful header that missed the goal.

However, HAGL didn’t hesitate to strike back. In the 22nd minute, Nguyen Phong Hong Duy surprised Jeonbuk’s defense with a long-range shot. 14 minutes later, Nguyen Van Toan passed in the center for Nguyen Cong Phuong, who set Jefferson Baiano in a comfortable position to finish. Instead of taking the shot, Baiano continued to dribble and he got intercepted.

Jeonbuk strengthened the attacking line in the second half with substitutions, which helped them put great pressure on HAGL. They exploited the left flank and made many passes into the box, two of them brought chances to Kim Bokyung to finish. But both his header and shot didn’t go in.

The last 30 minutes saw HAGL returning the favor. Washington Brandao’s shot almost went in. The Brazilian forward had great skill, but what he lacked was accuracy. Cong Phuong also missed two chances in the last 10 minutes.

HAGL paid the price in the second extra minute of the second half. From a cross that seemed not dangerous, two HAGL defenders jumped to clear the ball, creating a chance for an unmarked Moon Seon-min to volley it into the top corner. The game ended with a 1-0 victory for Jeonbuk.

Despite only having 28 percent of possession, HAGL put up a great fight as they made eight shots, compared to the opponent’s 16. This is their second defeat in group H of AFC Champions League. HAGL and Jeonbuk will take three days off before playing again next Monday.
