The Southeast Economic Zone is cooperating with Nghe An Province’s transport department to look into opening a Vinh-Guangdong flight route for people to work at Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP) in the province.
At a Monday conference at Nghe An Department of Transport, a representative of the department said the management board of the economic zone involved and Vietnam Airlines are discussing plans to open the flight route, before presenting it before authorities.
While a definite route has yet to be mapped, both sides want the end destination to be the Shenzhen Bao’an airport in China’s Guangdong Province, about 1,500 km from Nghe An’s capital Vinh.
“VSIP Nghe An has many officials and foreign experts working there. Opening the flight route is to satisfy this group’s travel demands, as well as passengers from both countries, helping with economic development. This is not a commercial flight route,” a representative of the transport department said.
However, certain challenges remain, the representative remarked, adding that China has not been approving new flight routes lately.
Vinh Airport, spanning 30,000 m2, has nine domestic flight routes, serving almost 30 flights a day by Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air, Bamboo Airways and Pacific Airlines.
The airport also offers a direct route to Taiwan. It boasted flights to both Bangkok and Vientiane before 2020.
VSIP Nghe An has been operational since 2015. Besides tens of thousands of locals working there, there are also thousands of non-national officials and foreign experts.
