Gold shop robber killed in fall during police chase

A man who robbed a jewelry shop in southern Vietnam fell off his motorbike and died while trying to get away from the police who were giving chase.

Huynh Hai Quang, 37, and his accomplice, Lai The Viet 21, arrived at the family-owned gold shop in Chau Thanh District in Tra Vinh Province on Thursday night when there were no customers and the owner was in the back in their living quarters.

They were armed with guns, wearing masks and jackets.

The woman owner soon detected them and screamed for help, and Quang shot her, causing injuries.

A young man employed in the shop approached them with a stick, but the two chased him away with their guns.

They smashed the glass cabinets, took out jewels and gold bullion, put them in a bag and fled on a motorbike.

The entire heist took only around a minute. Local police were informed of the case shortly later.

The local police dispatched several task forces to catch them.

The two robbers split up at a certain point, with Quang dropping Viet off and continuing on his way on the motorbike.

When he reached Cang Long District, he saw a group of police officers in the way, opened fire at them, but lost balance and fell off.

He was killed instantly.

Meanwhile, Viet took a bus to neighboring Vinh Long Province en route to Tien Giang Province near HCMC.

He was captured while taking a motorbike taxi service from Tien Giang to HCMC.

Viet is a native of the northern Hai Phong City and is currently in university in Hanoi.

He told the police that he became friends with Quang on social media and the latter recently told him to come to Tra Vinh to work, promising “high payment.”

But the police said they have discovered the two had several conversations in their chat histories.

Quang had bought a ticket for Viet to fly to HCMC from Hanoi, picked him up and brought him to Tra Vinh.

He also provided him with a loaded gun.

The police said Viet is now under investigation for “robbery.”

They seized two guns, 75 bullets and six taels of gold (1 tael = 37.5 gm) from the duo.

The jewelry shop is owned by a married couple.

The husband said he was not present during the robbery and the security guard had just ended his shift and left.

The woman is in stable condition in a local hospital.
