HÀ NỘI — Germany has donated an additional 4,000,230 doses of BioNTech/Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine to Việt Nam.

The shipments of the vaccine arrived in Hà Nội in late December 2021 and early January 2022.

This delivery brings the total number of vaccines supplied by Germany to Việt Nam to over 10 million doses.

The vaccine donation was made through the international vaccine platform COVAX in close coordination with UNICEF and the WHO Vietnam, as well as with the Vietnamese Government.

The most recent delivery is the largest German donation of vaccine doses to Việt Nam to date.

The German Ambassador to Việt Nam Dr Guido Hildner said: “Germany has donated vaccines and medical equipment to Việt Nam on several occasions in 2021.”

“With this new shipment of over four million doses of BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine via COVAX, Germany continues its ongoing support to Việt Nam to fight and overcome the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The continued high number of infections, as well as the Omicron variant spreading at a rapid pace worldwide, shows that the pandemic is far from being defeated in 2022.

“Germany will continue to show solidarity with Việt Nam in the fight against the effects of the pandemic and provide further vaccines through the international vaccine platform COVAX.”

Rana Flower, representative of UNICEF in Việt Nam, said: “We are grateful to the Government and people of Germany for sharing these life-saving vaccine doses with the Vietnamese people. Global solidarity, the generosity of Governments who have committed funding to COVAX and those Governments who are also donating vaccines – this is what is making the difference as we seek to ensure vaccines reach to every corner of the country and the world, equitably.”

“The vaccines donated by the Government of Germany will help Việt Nam in its effort to reach all, including with the booster doses. With the variant Omicron threatening to increase the number of those infected by COVID-19, the Ministry of Health is seeking to ensure that all benefit from a booster dose as soon as they are eligible.

“On behalf of UNICEF and WHO, let me thank all the donors to COVAX for their ongoing support, and with Tết (Lunar New Year) approaching, send an enormous message of gratitude, respect and best wishes to the health workers across Việt Nam who have worked tirelessly to ensure the safe delivery of vaccines,” she said.

Việt Nam has received 51 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines via the COVAX Facility.

The COVAX Facility is co-led by WHO, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness and Innovations, GAVI – the Vaccine Alliance, and UNICEF.

To date, Việt Nam with a population of 100 million people has administered a total of over 176.4 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, including 73.7 million second doses, and 23.7 million additional and booster shots. — VnExpress News
