Police in Thailand have detained a German tourist for stealing sunglasses worth 27,000 baht ($800) from a Russian woman at an immigration office in Surat Thani Province.
Late last week, the woman went to the immigration office in Surat Thani Province, around 550 kilometers from Bangkok, to get her visa extended. After completing procedures, she found her sunglasses were missing and reported the incident to local police, The Thaiger news portal reported.
Police used CCTV footage to identify a 31-year-old German man, who was also at the immigration office for visa extension that day, as the person who stole the sunglasses that the woman left on a chair.
Upon arriving at the man’s resort on the island of Koh Pha Ngan, police found the lost sunglasses in his bag.
The German tourist admitted that he had taken the sunglasses and pleaded guilty to the charge of theft. He is being held at the local police station for further investigation.
Thailand welcomed 11 million foreign visitors last year thanks to its open visa policy. The Thai government is targeting 30 million arrivals this year.
