Former national xiangi leader investigated for online gambling

The former head of the Vietnam national xiangi team is being investigated on charges of online football betting.

To Quoc Khanh, 50, was put under investigation by the Tay Ho District Police in Hanoi for gambling on Monday, and released on bail.

Nguyen Van Thi, 52, who gave an account to Khanh for online gambling, was arrested on May 24. After that, Khanh handed himself in to Tay Ho District Police and confessed.

In the past, Khanh was a top chess player, winning the national championship in 1994 with an Elo rating of 2,318.

A month ago, he was relieved of duty as the head of the national xiangqi team due to controversial decisions in picking coaches and players for the SEA Games.

His decisions when choosing a list of athletes and coaches for the team were considered poor, receiving significant backlash from the xiangqi community in Vietnam.
