Floods tear across Vietnam border town

Hundreds of houses were flooded by heavy rains in Muong Xen Town in Nghe An Province, with housing appliances and vehicles carried away by the strong flow.

Rain started pouring Saturday night in Ky Son District, which borders Laos, and flood was recorded from 4 a.m. as water poured down from upstream.

At 8 a.m. the water was over 2 meters high, forcing many people to carry their stuff to high areas.

“We lost all of our stuff on the first floor in the mud water which was 1.5 meter high. My husband, children and I were only able to run to the second floor to save ourselves,” said Lan, a local resident.

Tho Ba Re, deputy chairman of Ky Son District, said that at least three houses have been washed away, and 50 flooded.

At least two cars have gone with the water, but no one was reported to be inside, he added.

Due to the effects of Storm Noru, Nghe An recorded rainfall of 300 to 600 millimeters from September 27 to 29.

So far seven people in the province have died because of impacts of the storm; while 13 districts with 11,000 houses have been flooded.
