Flash floods sweep away 4 in northern Vietnam


Four men in Cao Bang Province at China border were swept away by flash floods triggered by heavy rains on Tuesday.

A group of five men in Mong An Commune of Bao Lam District were getting sand for a construction project in the afternoon as the flash floods arrived all of a sudden and caught them off guard.

One of them managed to escape from the stream while the other four were swept away a few minutes later.

The authorities in Bao Lam District said one body was found late Tuesday night and rescue forces are still searching for the remaining three.

As many as 100, including local residents, have been mobilized for the search.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said from 7:00 p.m. Monday to the evening of Tuesday, Cao Bang recorded rainfall of 80 mm.

The center said the northern region, including Hanoi, will continue to receive heavy rains until Wednesday under the impact of a low pressure trench in combination with a wind convergence area.
