Finance ministry wants environmental tax break on fuel continued in 2023

The Ministry of Finance is seeking to keep environmental tax on gasoline at VND1,000 per liter ($0.042) throughout next year amid concerns of rising inflation.

It is gathering comments from relevant government bodies on the proposal to keep the tax same as this year, which has been reduced by 75% since June amid surging gasoline retail price.

It wants the tax on diesel to stay the same at VND500 per liter.

The tax will return to its original level in 2024 at VND4,000 on gasoline, VND3,000 on aircraft fuel, and VND2,000 on diesel.

The ministry forecast that next year average fuel price will be at $95-105 per barrel, down 12-20% from this year, but still at a high level.

Fuel consumption is estimated at 14.5 million cubic meters next year, up 10% from this year. Gasoline is set to account for 42% and diesel nearly 56%.

Inflation is expected to rise next year. The National Assembly last month set the target for the government to keep inflation under 4.5% next year, up 0.5% points from the target this year.
