Filipino businessman Chavit Singson awaits Olympic Champion Carlos Yulo’s decision on $89K ‘family unity’ incentive offer

Businessman and former politician Chavit Singson stated that he is still awaiting Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo’s response to his offer of 5 million pesos, contingent upon the athlete reconciling with his family.

According to The Manila Times, Singson shared his hope that Carlos would accept the offer. “Now that he’s a champion and has won gold medals, he should show that he is a role model and bring his family together,” the businessman declared. “Whatever they’ve done before, Caloy should forgive them.”

“Caloy” is a common nickname for Carlos in the Philippines.

Singson disclosed that he had reached out to both of Carlos’ parents, who are reportedly open to reconciling with their son.

The offer was made to Carlos in a video interview that Singson posted on his Facebook page last week.

“If they [Carlos and his family] are together, I will give them 5 million pesos,” he proclaimed.

He described his offer as not only a recognition of Carlos’ achievements at the Paris 2024 Olympics but also as an acknowledgment of the importance of family and community support in achieving and sharing success.

“I aim to convey a powerful message that an individual’s success is never theirs alone,” he explained. “It is shared by those who stand by them, offering love, guidance, and unwavering support.”

This proposal comes after a publicized feud between Carlos and his mother Angelica Poquiz Yulo, which, according to the South China Morning Post, may have overshadowed his Olympic achievements.

The conflict stemmed from allegations Carlos made in a TikTok video on Aug. 6, claiming his mother mishandled his finances, misled him about his gymnastics incentives, and falsely accused his girlfriend, content creator Chloe San Jose, of financial exploitation.

Angelica held a press conference the following day, where she expressed regret and explained her actions by citing concerns about her children’s financial future.

“The money was given to me,” she stated during the press conference, as reported by the New York Post. “As a mother, I was worried that my child might have financial problems in the future. So I invested it under my name.”

Carlos, 24, is recognized as the most decorated Filipino gymnast in history, according to Forbes. He is the second Filipino to win a gold medal and the first to win multiple golds at the Olympics.

Beyond Singson’s offer, a coalition of government entities, leading business figures, and major Philippine companies have collectively promised Carlos over 58 million pesos in cash and gifts, including a condominium in Manila and lifetime supplies of free buffets, baked mac and cheese, and chicken inasal.

Singson, 83, served as mayor of Narvacan city in the Philippines from 2019 to 2022. He also held multiple terms as governor of Ilocos Sur province, where Narvacan is located, during the periods of 1972 to 1986, 1992 to 2001, 2004 to 2007, and 2010 to 2013.

Additionally, he was appointed Deputy National Security Adviser for the Philippine government in 2008.
