The team, consisting of students from the Hung Yen University of Technology and Education located in the northern province of Hung Yen, trounced the special administrative region 5-1, making Vietnam’s second consecutive win at the annual handmade robot competition.

This is also the fifth time the Southeast Asian country has become the champion at the contest, following the victories in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2014.

First held in 2002 by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union for university, college and polytechnic students in the Asia-Pacific region, ABU Robocon requires participating robots to complete a task within a set period of time.

The event is broadcast in many countries through ABU member broadcasters.

Themed “Robominton – Badminton Robo-Game,” this year’s contest aimed to encourage the youth to explore their talents in transforming robotic technology into the sport.

It attracted the participation of 19 teams from 18 countries and territories in the region.

According to the organizers, the event was intended to offer young engineers a platform to innovate and excel in creative thinking, to challenge them to transform and demonstrate their creativity and technical ideas in robotics, as well as to establish cross-cultural contacts in an environment.
