Philippines head coach Norman Fegidero was happy with how his team played and drew 0-0 against Vietnam in their second game at SEA Games 31 men’s football Sunday night.
After winning 4-0 against Timor Leste in the first game, Fegidero said he will adjust the strategy to win Vietnam. Although the Philippines didn’t win, they still forced Vietnam to share points on Viet Tri Stadium in the northern province of Phu Tho.
“Vietnam are the defending gold medalist and the number one contender in this SEA Games, so drawing against them was a huge success for us,” Fegidero said in the post-game press conference.
The Philippines were under great pressure from Vietnam most of the time during the game. But that was also their intention since they have created many layers of defense and kept their composure against Vietnam’s effort.
“After doing research on Vietnam’s playing style, we have prepared a defensive approach for this game. Of course, my players also had to try their best to lock down the lethal attackers of the hosts. The rain also supported our playing style,” he added.
With one point in this game, the Philippines are still leading group A with four points after two games like Vietnam but scored more goals.
“Our target is to advance to the semifinals, so this result and the current position will give our confidence a boost. We will rest a bit then focus on winning Myanmar in the next game,” Fegidero said.
