‘Doctor Strange’ most Googled film in Vietnam this year

A 2022 Google Trends report revealed that the Marvel blockbuster “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” was the most searched movies by Vietnamese netizens this year.

Directed by Sam Raimi, the film starred British actor Benedict Cumberbatch. The character Dr. Strange is an American doctor who goes to Nepal to treat injuries and acquires supernatural powers.

Strange and his teammates must then stand up to protect America Chavez (played by Xochitl Gomez), the first child superhero.

Other Hollywood blockbusters on Vietnam’s top 10 most searched films list included: DC superhero films “The Batman” (4th place) and “Black Adam” (9th) — as well as Universal Pictures’ “Minions.

The Rise of Gru” (5th) also became the fifth highest-grossing foreign film of all time at the local box office.

Home-grown films also dominated the list of the most searched movies in Vietnam this year with three entries. Biopic on legendary musician Trinh Cong Son “Em Va Trinh” (Trinh and I), the biggest Vietnamese hit this year with box office collections of more than VND100 billion (US$4.2 million), ranked the 2nd on the list.

The film received some backlash for inappropriately depicting the private life of Michiko Yoshii, Son’s Japanese muse. One of the primary plot developments of the film is the love story between Son and Yoshii.

“Trinh Cong Son”, another movie about the “Vietnamese Bob Dylan” produced by Galaxy ranked 3rd on the list. However, the film was withdrawn from local theaters after five days of screening due to low attendance.

Coming in 6th place was the chick-flick “Bay Ngot Ngao'” (Naked Truth). After debuting in local theaters in mid-February, the film grossed VND82 billion (over $3.5 million) and was released across 50 movie theaters in America in late April.

Vietnamese viewers also favored Japanese animated films such as “Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween” and “One Piece Film: Red,” which came in 7th and 8th place, respectively.

South Korea’s military comedy “6/45” was 10th on Google’s Vietnam list. The film earned VND27 billion in the first three days of its release. This milestone is also an all-time high for a Korean film’s domestic box office opening. The film was also the first Korean film to exceed the VND100 billion mark in Vietnam.
