Da Nang to establish semiconductor, AI research center

The central port city of Da Nang plans to build a research center for semiconductors and AI, opening new opportunities for Vietnam’s semiconductor industry.

The Da Nang People’s Committee issued the decision on Friday to establish the Da Nang Semiconductor and Artificial Intelligence Center for Research and Training, with Le Hoang Phuc as its director.

The center is expected to be situated within a software park area in Hai Chau District.

Legal procedures for the project are currently proceeding.

The center will train personnel and assist with attracting investment to promote research and startup businesses in the field of semiconductors and artificial intelligence.

For the 2024-2025 period, the center aims to complete all legal frameworks regarding its structure and organization, as well all processes and procedures regarding proposing drafts on development policy mechanisms, international cooperation and support for businesses in the field.

Le Trung Chinh, chairman of the Da Nang People’s Committee, said the center would cooperate with the city to build and deploy projects to develop semiconductors in the area.

“The city hopes that the center would be a contact point to open up cooperation opportunities in the fields of semiconductors and artificial intelligence between Da Nang and its partners,” he said.

Nguyen Huy Dung, deputy minister of information and communications, said three research centers for semiconductors in Hanoi, Da Nang and HCMC would go into operation by 2025.

By 2030, Vietnam plans to have around 50,000 chip engineers, 200,000 semiconductor engineers and 500,000 workers in the semiconductor industry.
