A driver in Da Nang was fined VND11 million ($463.65) for transporting a South Korean tourist without a license and charging her 10 times the usual fees.
Truong Hai, 31, on December 27 last year approached Heo Hyeyun, 35, at the Da Nang Airport and offered to give her a ride to the Novotel hotel in Hai Chau District in the central city.
Heo Hyeyun had already booked a Grab ride at the time, but Hai took her phone and canceled the booking himself, Tran Lanh, head inspector of the Da Nang Department of Transport, said Monday.
When they reached the Bach Dang-Ly Tu Trong intersection next to the Novotel hotel, Hai charged the woman ₩120,000 ($92.55) for a 4.5-km ride, over 10 times the usual fare.
The tourist then reported the incident to the customer feedback division of the Department of Tourism. Police of Da Nang then summoned Hai, and he admitted to have overcharged the passenger.
Hai’s car was also not licensed for passenger transport services.
His driving license was temporarily revoked.
Heo Hyeyun was eventually returned the money she was overcharged by the airport’s customer feedback division.
