Cooking gas prices rise again after frequent declines

Cooking gas prices increased by up to 4.9% on November 1, the first rise in six months after a series of six cuts.

The retail price of a 12-kg gas cylinder rose by VND20,000 ($0.80), or 4.9%, to VND425,000 in HCMC and other southern localities.

In Hanoi and neighboring localities it increased by 3.9%.

Between May to October the price had dropped by a total of VND111,000 in the south.

Saigon Petrol Company, a leading oil and natural gas supplier in HCMC, said the higher global prices were the reason for the hike.

They stood at US$610 per ton in November, up $35 from October.

Many places in Europe, North America and the northern part of Asia currently have higher demand for fuel for heating in winter.

In Vietnam, domestic supply meets only some 60% of the demand.
