Coach Mourinho makes over $100M getting fired

Famed Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho is believed to have earned around $101 million just from being sacked by clubs throughout his managerial career.

Mourinho has just been sacked for the sixth time in his career after parting ways with Italian club Roma on Tuesday, following a poor run in the Serie A that put the club at ninth place.

His contract with Roma is valid until June this year, but Roma decided to dismissed him “with immediate effect.”

According to Daily Mail, after six firings, Mourinho cashed out a staggering $101 million in total compensation.

Of the figure, Chelsea paid him $22.5 million in 2007, and then $10.5 million again in 2015.

In 2013, Mourinho received $21.5 million after Real Madrid dismissed him. His biggest compensation paycheck was $25 million when he left Manchester United in 2018.

After that, he managed Tottenham Hotspurs for 17 months before getting sacked and leaving with $19 million in his pocket.

When he got laid off by Roma on Tuesday, he received $3.7 million.

No other gaffer comes anywhere near matching the amount of money that Mourinho has been paid in his career by getting fired. He’s made more than double anyone else this way.

Trailing him in second place is Antonio Conte with $47 million, of which $33 million came from Chelsea in 2018.

Mourinho joined Roma in 2021 for a three-year deal. The 60-year-old manager helped Roma win the 2021-2022 European Conference League, their first-ever European title. The next season, Mourinho led Roma to the Europa League final, where they lost to Sevilla in penalties.

Roma have been inconsistent this season. They placed ninth in Serie A despite having the third highest payroll in the league. Compared to the same period last season, Roma earned nine points less and conceded six goals more. They also lost to city rival Lazio in the Coppa Italia and failed to top their Europa League group despite facing weaker opponents.

A few hours after sacking Mourinho, Roma announced that their legend Daniele De Rossi would act as interim manager for the rest of the season.

Dubbed “The Special One” by media, Mourinho is one of the most decorated managers ever, and is considered to be among the greatest managers of all time. His biggest achievements are winning the 2003-2004 UEFA Champions League with Porto and the treble with Inter in the 2009-2010 season.
