Chinese tourist killed after zipline incident in Thailand

Thailand authorities have closed a zipline tourist attraction in Chiang Mai following an accident that killed a Chinese female tourist and injured her husband last week.

On Thursday, when Jing Chen, 44, and her husband were walking on a suspension bridge at Jungle Flight Chiangmai tourist site in Doi Saket District, a large tree fell on the bridge, causing them to fall from a 15-meter height, Bangkok Post reported.

They were taken to a nearly hospital, but the woman succumbed to her injuries in the ambulance while her husband sustained a broken arm and leg and is receiving treatment at a local hospital.

According to investigators, the couple were returning from a zipline adventure they had joined earlier in the morning.

Heavy rains have been blamed for the falling tree on the suspension bridge, Nation Thailand reported citing a source from investigators.

Officials had contacted the Chinese consulate in Chiang Mai to support their family.

According to police, the zipline tourist site insured tourists for one million baht (US$28,350) in case of death and up to 500,000 baht for injuries.
