Prices of the made-in-China Wuling Mini EV have been reduced by around 20% after Vietnamese competitor VinFast entered the affordable segment with its latest vehicle.
The base model of the Wuling Mini EV, which offers a range of 120 kilometers per charge, is now sold at VND197 million ($7,800), down 23% from May, according to TMT Motors, the distributor of Wuling vehicles in Vietnam.
The 170-kilometer version is priced at VND231 million, down 17%. TMT Motors said that the discounts were part of a planned strategy.
Dealers, however, said that prices were lowered to enhance the competitiveness of Wuling cars after VinFast delivered its cheapest car VF 3 to customers earlier this month.
The VF 3 is now priced at VND240 million for the battery lease option. To own both the car and the battery a customer needs to pay VND322 million.
Although both Wuling and VinFast cars are in the lower range, the VF 3 is a bigger vehicle with larger battery, more powerful engine, and a longer distance per charge.
Wuling cars are made by SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile, a venture of two Chinese companies and American giant General Motors.
TMT Motors last year targeted to sell over 5,000 Wuling Mini EVs, but ended up selling less than 600 units.
The company targets to distribute 1,000 units this year.
