Mekong Delta mangoes are flooding Ho Chi Minh City with prices at half of last year thanks to a plentiful harvest.
Fruit vendors in HCMC have seen a 60% surge in mango supply from Dong Thap Province.
Hanh, a vendor at Ba Chieu Market, said that she buys around 100 kg of mangos a day and sells for VND35,000-60,000 ($1.49-2.56) each.
A bountiful harvest is the reason for the surge in supply of Mekong Delta mangos, said a representative of the operator of Thu Duc Market, a popular wholesaler of fruit and vegetables.
The rise in supply has brought the price down to around VND25,000-30,000 wholesale.
Major retail chains, such as GO! And Tops Market are also selling mangoes at a discount of 20-35%.
Nguyen Thi Bich Van, CEO of Central Retail, said that her supermarkets had around 200 tons of the fruit available, the highest ever.
Dong Thap is set to produce 180,000 tons of mangos this year and 72% are set to be consumed in HCMC, said Nguyen Van Luan, deputy director of Dong Thap Department of Industry and Trade.
The fruit is sold at brick-and-mortar stores and online, he added.
The province plans to increase exports of the fragrant fruit in the next few years.
