Cambodia to allow Chinese tourists to make payments in yuan

Cambodia will allow Chinese tourists to pay for tourism services in yuan, instead of the Cambodian Riel or U.S. dollar as part of its policy to boost tourism recovery.

All hotels and restaurants, as well as all tourism services, will be able to accept payment in Chinese yuan, Tourism Minister Thong Khon said, according to The Khmer Times.

Flights between China and Cambodia are gradually resuming service, with direct routes from Kunming and Shanghai to the resort city of Siem Reap starting on Feb. 16.

Direct flights between the two countries have returned to around 40% of pre-pandemic levels, according to Cambodia’s tourism ministry.

China allowed its travel agencies to organize outbound tours to 20 countries from Feb. 6, including Cambodia.

A day later, an Air China flight with 125 passengers landed at Phnom Penh International Airport

In 2022, Cambodia received nearly 2.3 million international tourists, of which more than 100,000 were Chinese.

Cambodia is expected to receive more than 4.3 million international tourists including nearly 2 million Chinese this year.
