A tractor on fire impeded traffic the Phap Van-Cau Gie expressway for over three hours, forcing vehicles to be re-routed to the National Highway 1A.
At around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, a tractor running on the Phap Van-Cau Gie expressway in the Hanoi-Ninh Binh direction caught fire as it reached Y Yen District of Nam Dinh Province.
The driver jumped off the vehicle and tried to extinguish the flames, but failed. After around 10 minutes, the fire engulfed the tractor and multiple explosions could be heard.
Firefighters and rescue personnel of Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh provinces were soon dispatched to the scene. Traffic police officers also closed down a 30-km section of the expressway from Phu Ly City to Ninh Binh City, and re-routed cars to take other roads instead.
The fire was extinguished at around 3 p.m., with the tractor incinerated. The 30-km section of the expressway remained closed as of 5 p.m. for an investigation into the fire.
The Phap Van-Cau Gie expressway section from Hanoi to Ninh Binh spans around 90 km. It is a vital traffic route that connects Hanoi with other localities in the south, resulting in high level of traffic on the route.
