Broken tree canopy demolishes car in HCMC

A number of broken tree canopies, spanning over 30 m, fell and severely damaged a car during heavy rains in HCMC’s District 10 on Monday.

At around 11 a.m., branches broke from a resin tree on Le Hong Phong Street, falling onto a 7-seat car parked nearby.

Two people inside the car panicked. When people outside tried to remove the branches that were blocking the car’s doors, more branches kept falling.

The fallen canopies, with several branches spanning up to 30 cm in width, severely damaged the car, including its windshield and hood.

“The people were just getting out of my store when it happened. Fortunately, they both managed to get inside the car in time,” said Huu Phuc, a store owner on Le Hong Phong Street, adding that both people got out of the car safely later and no one was hurt.

Authorities had barricaded a 300 m road section to deal with the problem. Environmental workers have sawn off tree parts for easier removal, and crane trucks were dispatched to the scene to cut off branches that may also break in the future.

HCMC is in the peak of its rainy season, with strong winds often causing trees to break or fall.
