British Council approved to resume IELTS exams

The Ministry of Education and Training granted approval for the British Council to resume IELTS exams from Friday.

The approval allows the British Council to cooperate with Dong A Education Tech Ltd., ODIN Education JSC and University Access Centre Vietnam Ltd. to organize the tests.

These companies have to inform People’s Committees at provincial and municipal levels about exam schedules at least five days earlier and are required to submit reports on their operations every six months, before June 25 and December 25, to the education ministry.

IDP, the other entity authorized to conduct IELTS tests in Vietnam, received a similar approval Thursday.

IDP approved to resume IELTS exams starting Thursday Last week, the IDP, the British Council and other institutions conducting foreign language proficiency exams had announced their suspension until further notice.

Affected exams included the IELTS for English and the Nat-test for Japanese.

Deputy education minister Nguyen Huu Do said earlier the reason for the suspension was agencies failing to complete documents to obtain the ministry’s approval, hindering proper management and the ability to ensure quality.

In Vietnam, the IELTS exam has been conducted since the mid-90s, mainly for students and professionals wanting to study and work abroad; and for English teachers. In recent years, Vietnamese universities have begun to use IELTS scores as criteria for admission.
