BIS Hanoi students beat world average in IBDP examination

The average IB diploma score for BIS Hanoi’s Class of 2022 is 35 points, well above the global average of 32.

The British International School Hanoi (BIS Hanoi) has announced the achievement of its students in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) for the 2021/22 academic school year.

For the fifth consecutive year, their students have exceeded the global average, widening the gap with other IB schools around the world.

Over a quarter of this year’s cohort achieved 40 points and above. This is the level of attainment required to gain admission to world elite universities, including Ivy League and Oxbridge. Notably, this year, not one but two students from BIS Hanoi achieved a remarkable perfect score of 45 points in the IB exam.

“It took me 10 seconds to believe that I received a perfect score in the IB examination. Tears streamed down my cheeks, and it felt like a huge reward for all of my efforts during the tough program. I just wanted to express my heartfelt gratitude to the BIS faculty and staff! This incredible accomplishment would not have been possible without the assistance of all the teachers at BIS Hanoi,” said Park Chaeyeon, one of the two perfect IB scorers of BIS Hanoi.

In addition, 61 percent of the BIS Hanoi graduating students were awarded the special distinction of a bilingual diploma (BD). This means they demonstrated first language proficiency in two or more languages.

“An exceptional set of results and university acceptances, especially considering our students spent half of their IBDP in lockdown conditions. A testament to the perseverance and solidarity of our strong community,” said Chris Newman, secondary head at BIS Hanoi.

This academic success marks the culmination of the two-year IBDP and highlights an important milestone for BIS Hanoi students as they take their first steps towards university life and college education.

With this year’s outstanding results, BIS Hanoi students continue attending top universities around the globe. The school’s Class of 2022 has secured offers from some of the world’s best universities worldwide, including University of California, Berkley (U.S.), University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) (U.S.), King’s College London (U.K.), University of Toronto (Canada), University of Melbourne (Australia), University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong), and more.

Dr. Elise Ecoff, group education director at Nord Anglia Education, said: “As always, this year’s IB results are testament to our students’ hard work and dedication. These results reflect their commitment to learning and we couldn’t be prouder of what they’ve achieved, which now sets them on the path to studying at the world’s best universities. This year’s exceptional results are all the more impressive given the challenges of the pandemic over the last two years. Our students’ resilience and determination has been inspiring.”

The IBDP is a two-year education program for students aged 16-19. Recognized in more than 100 countries worldwide, the IB program is one of the most highly regarded international curricula, well known for its breadth and academic rigor, which nurtures a global outlook and prepares students for success at university and in their working lives.
