HÀ NỘI — President Tô Lâm was unanimously elected as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Việt Nam during a conference of the 13th Party Central Committee on Saturday.

Tô Lâm was born on July 10, 1957, in Nghĩa Trụ Commune, Văn Giang District, Hưng Yên Province. He currently resides on Phan Đình Phùng Street, Quán Thánh Ward in Hà Nội’s Ba Đình District.

He joined the Communist Party of Việt Nam on August 22, 1981, and has an impressive academic background, holding the titles of Professor and Doctor of Law.

Throughout his career, Tô Lâm has held several significant positions. He has been a member of the Central Committee for the 11th, 12th, and 13th tenures, and a member of the Politburo for the 12th and 13th tenures.

He has also served as a deputy of the National Assembly for the 14th and 15th tenures.

His tenure in the Ministry of Public Security is noteworthy. He served as Deputy Minister from 2010 to 2016 and was appointed Minister from 2016 to 2024. In January 2019, he was promoted to the rank of General of the People’s Public Security.
