Binh Duong to spend $19.6M on surveillance camera system

Police in southern Binh Duong Province have proposed installing 421 cameras worth VND469 billion ($19.6 million) on major roads for security and accident surveillance, among other purposes.

The camera installation project would be part of a plan to establish a smart city, with Binh Duong police as the main investor.

In a Wednesday conference on Binh Duong’s socio-economic situation, Colonel Nguyen Minh Than of the province’s police department, said the cameras would be to detect fires and traffic violations, as well as to maintain security and order.

In addition to installing the cameras, the project also calls for the construction of operation centers, hardware stations and software to manage and store images, Than said, adding that the VND469 billion price tag “is not unusually high.”

The Binh Duong People’s Committee said seven districts in the province have already installed cameras to monitor traffic, maintain security and look out for fires. These cameras would eventually be integrated with operation centers at the provincial police and transport departments.

Several cities in Vietnam, such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, have already installed cameras to record traffic violations and maintain security and public order.
