Billionaire competes with politician for Thailand football presidency

Billionaire Nualphan Lamsam, also known as Madam Pang, will run for Football Association of Thailand (FAT) president against main competitor politician Pauline Ngarmpring.

Siam Sport reported that Madam Pang and Ngarmpring will be two of the candidates for the FAT president election that will take place on Feb. 8, 2024.

FAT is accepting applications (from Nov. 11 to Dec. 12) for the president position, after Somyot Poompanmoung decided not to continue when his term expires in February 2024.

There are currently four strong candidates: Madam Pang, Ngarmpring, former Thai League spokesman Worawong Vitthawan, and politician Thanasak Surprarasert.

Both Madam Pang and Ngarmpring have announced their support team in their run for FAT president.

Madam Pang said she is backed by a series of Thai football clubs including Thai League 1 giants Buriram United, BG Pathum United, Muang Thong United, Chonburi and Chiang Rai United, Bangkok Post reported.

Ngarmpring also has a strong team, with her advisor being Wirot Lakkhanaadisorn, a former member of the Thailand House of Representatives.

Madam Pang, 57, is a businessman, politician, and billionaire. She is a fifth-generation Lamsam, one of Thailand’s wealthiest families.

In 2021, she became the manager of the Thailand men’s national team and U23 team.

Ngarmpring, 59, is a well-known politician in Thailand. In 2019, she ran for Prime Minister of Thailand, becoming the country’s first transgender to do so.
