Bali’s badly behaving foreigners banned from renting motorbikes

“Tourists will have to travel using cars from travel agents. They are not allowed to use motorbikes or any vehicles that are not leased by a travel agent,” Bali governor Wayan Koster said on Monday, Jakarta Post reported.

It is unclear how the ban would be upheld.

The move came after more than 171 foreign nationals were issued traffic tickets from late February to early March, according to local police records. Some tourists also use fake license plates.

“If you are a tourist, then act like a tourist,” said the governor.

Foreign tourists in Bali often prefer renting motorbikes to get around the island where public transport system has not yet been well-developed.

Known for its beaches, temples, waterfalls and nightlife, Bali drew 6.2 million foreign visitors in 2019, the year before the pandemic.
